Comorbidities in rheumatic diseases - from clinical to translational approaches

BMC Rheumatology is currently accepting submissions to a thematic series entitled ‘Comorbidities in rheumatic diseases - from clinical to translational approaches’.

Rheumatic diseases have a significant burden and impact on healthcare systems and are one of the most common causes of disability and work-related absences. However, in addition to the disease burden itself, patients with rheumatic diseases are also at an increased risk of developing a variety of comorbid conditions. These comorbid conditions can arise as a result of the disease itself, but also from its treatment. Over recent years, a growing list of comorbidities have been identified that are frequently associated with rheumatic diseases and these include: malignancies, cardiovascular diseases, infections, kidney diseases, lung diseases, depression, osteoporosis, insulin resistance and anemia to name just a few. These comorbidities have a significant effect on the lives of patients and therefore it is important to increase our understanding of these conditions to ensure optimal treatment and improvements in quality of life.

It is in this context that BMC Rheumatology is launching a special issue exploring this increasingly important area in rheumatology. We are welcoming Research articles, Case reports, Debates and Reviews on all aspects of research into comorbidity in rheumatic disease, including pre-clinical and translational science, clinical investigations and epidemiological studies.

To submit your manuscript, please use our online submission system at BMC Rheumatology. Please indicate in your cover letter that you would like the article to be considered for the ‘Comorbidities in rheumatic diseases - from clinical to translational approaches’ special series.

If you would like to enquire about the suitability of a study for consideration or would like to propose a topic for a Debate or Review article, please email a presubmission enquiry to bmcrheumatol@biomedcentral.com.

Deadline for submission: 31 March 2019
